Xu Qin: Marx’s view on the “retribution” of colonialism and its practical enlightenment - Studying the Indian Uprising and other documents
     Release time: 2025-04-10
The Indian uprising that broke out in 1857 aroused great concern of Marx. In writing a series of articles about the Indian uprising, Marx believed that the Indian people’s uprising against British colonial rule was a kind of “retribution” for the colonists, and it was the colonists themselves who forged the tools of retribution. This “retribution” is mainly reflected in three aspects: first, the indigenous army established by British colonists to conquer and rule India has become the core force against colonial rule; second, Sipaiyi’s “atrocities” in the uprising are a concentrated reflection of what the British colonists did in India; third, the expenditure of British occupation of India may have reached an amount that is difficult to compensate for the income from colonial rule of India. At a time when colonial thinking has not subsided and hegemonism and bullying are prevalent, it is of great practical significance to review Marx’s above comments for promoting world peace and tranquility.
