Geng Fangbing:The Interpretation Domain of Populism in Postmodernism and Its Reflection and Criticism: A Review of “Towards Green Democratic Revolution: Leftist Populism and Emotional Power”
     Release time: 2025-04-09
Populism, as a politically ambiguous term, although widely influential in real movements, is difficult to integrate into a strong theoretical explanation. Post Marxist flag bearer Chantal Murphy’s postmodern interpretation of populism in “Towards a Green Democratic Revolution: Leftist Populism and Emotional Power” demonstrates that the ambiguity of populism is actually a misplaced domain of interpretation. By placing it in a postmodern context, an attempt is made to provide a diagnostic approach. Populism in the post Marxist perspective replaces class politics with identity politics through the construction of the “people”, but faces the dilemma of deconstruction in the confrontation between the people and elites. However, left-wing populism attempts to replace class with emotions to integrate collective identity, rebuild the People’s Front, and ultimately leave the liberation forces hanging in the air. It can be seen that post Marxism has made great efforts in interpreting important issues such as the people and class, but ultimately deviated from the basic position of Marxism.
