Abstract: Mao Zedong regarded both investigation and research and the mass line as major issues related to the success or failure of the Party’s cause, and emphasized the need to attach great importance to carrying out investigation and research and resolutely following the mass line. Mao Zedong relied on solid and in-depth investigation and research to promote the combination of the basic tenets of Marxism with the concrete reality of China, and the mass line was a great theoretical creation of Mao Zedong after he used investigation and research to overcome the subjectivism within the Party and realize the combination of Marxism with the concrete reality of China. The in-depth investigation and research among the masses and the earnest practice of the mass line that Mao Zedong advocated have a high degree of internal consistency, and the implementation process of the two forms a mutually supportive and mutually reinforcing relationship. However, this highly intertwined relationship does not mean that the core functions of the two can be replaced by each other. Systematically sorting out and accurately analyzing the internal logic and interrelationship between Mao Zedong’s thought on investigation and research and the mass line will be of great benefit to the in-depth study, inheritance and development of Mao Zedong Thought.
