Abstract: Holding fast to Marxism as the soul and fine traditional Chinese culture as the root is the foundation and prerequisite for theoretical innovation. Insisting on combining the basic tenets of Marxism with the fine traditional Chinese culture is an important element of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, which profoundly reveals the historical and cultural underpinnings of CPC’s success in opening up and developing the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, that is, to activate the vital and excellent factors of the fine traditional Chinese culture and give them new connotations for the times with Marxism, so that the fine traditional Chinese culture can become modern; and to infuse the great spirit and rich wisdom of the Chinese nation into Marxism at a deeper level, so that Marxism can become Chinese. As a regular understanding of opening up and developing the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the “second combination” is a profound summary of the historical experience of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs our times, a theoretical grasp of the laws of building modern civilization of the Chinese nation, and a high degree of self-confidence and self-consciousness in creating a new form of human civilization with Chinese culture. To continue to promote the cultural prosperity, build a powerful cultural country, and build the modern civilization of the Chinese nation from a new starting point, it is necessary to consolidate the subjectivity and be guided by the correct and innovative worldview and methodology; to grasp the regularity and profoundly grasp the law of the development of Chinese civilization; and to strengthen the leading role and actively build an autonomous knowledge system of the discipline of Marxist theory.
