Cheng Meidong:On the Distinctive Chinese Characteristics of Chinese-Style Modernization
     Release time: 2024-06-14
Abstract: The Chinese-style modernization has distinctive Chinese characteristics, which can be systematically demonstrated in three aspects: Firstly, Chinese-style modernization is initiated and gradually formed on the basis of China’s unique national conditions, with its uniqueness manifested in multiple tasks faced during the initial stage of modernization, difficulty in capital accumulation, social turmoil, and the decline of central government power. Secondly, the experiences and lessons from the historical development of world modernization have implied the necessity of exploring the path of Chinese-style modernization. The colonial expansion, plundering of wealth, severe polarization between the rich and the poor, disregard for people’s rights, and social unrest experienced during the modernization process in Europe and America warn China not to simply replicate the Western model of modernization. The generally underdeveloped, less developed, unstable, and insecure history and current situation of the vast majority of Asian, African, and Latin American countries confronted in their development process when following the European and American model of modernization also illustrate the inevitability of taking the Chinese-style modernization path from another perspective. Thirdly, after 1949, under the leadership of the CPC, a Chinese-style modernization characterized by a massive population, commitment to common prosperity, coordinated development of material and spiritual civilizations, harmonious coexistence between human and nature, and adherence to peaceful development has been formed.
