A year after the war in Ukraine, Communist Party of Spain welcome the Chinese peace proposal: ceasefire, dialogue and peace.

This February 24 marks one year since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The latest Russian announcements withdrawing from the NEW START arms control agreement and the rain of millions in offensive material announced by the US make a quick resolution of the conflict less likely.

Feeding the war means prolonging and aggravating the human consequences -thousands of deaths and more than eight million displaced-, economic -inflationary crisis and increase in the cost of living- and political rise of tensions between great powers and consolidation of a new “Cold War” Something we cannot allow.

Communist Party of Spain has reiterated its rejection of the Russian invasion, the irresponsible and dangerous expansionism of NATO and the subordination and lack of autonomous position as well as the strategic dependence on the EU.

Faced with those who continue to encourage this horror, we have insistently called for the construction of the necessary conditions for a ceasefire to be reached that enables an honest and sincere dialogue between the parties to put an end to the war and the international escalation that we are experiencing.

In this sense, Communist Party of Spain salute the “China Proposal for a Political Solution to the Ukraine Crisis” for proposing a framework that is not only desirable but also plausible. The document, made public today coinciding with the first anniversary of the war, proposes twelve points that should serve as a guide to achieve peace and redefine international relations, betting on cooperation over competition.

Communist Party of Spain subscribes to the immediate call to Russia, Ukraine and the international community as a whole to respect the sovereignty of countries, to abandon the Cold War mentality, to cease hostilities, to resume peace talks, to resolve the humanitarian crisis and protect civilians and prisoners, reduce strategic risks including military containment, end sanctions and promote post-conflict reconstruction.

Communist Party of Spain continue to defend international mediation and value the potential of the United Nations as the best guarantee for peace, having to play a leading role in resolving this and all wars.

For an immediate ceasefire, the start of peace talks and the construction of a fairer international order that puts the sovereignty of the peoples at the center.
