Abstract 

　　Inspired by Cheng Enfu’s new concept of neo-imperialism, this article reflects on the Marxist theory of imperialism from the height of our times. It examines the roots of imperialism in the basic relations of capitalism and reviews the evolution of the imperialist system in the capitalist era through about 1990, and finally assesses the contemporary world system.
