Stefan Gandler: Ideology, Fetishism and Objective Appearance on Marx’s Philosophical Reflections in Capital as Foundation for a Critical Theory of Society
     Release time: 2025-11-14

  Abstract

In order to present the Marxian concept of ideology in the critique of political economy, in this article we take as our point of departure two fundamental texts: the 1859 preface to the Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy and the subchapter “The Fetishism of the Commodity and Its Secret,” in the second edition of the first volume of Capital. In the said texts, what is formulated is not an academic concept of ideology, and in the second, the word “ideology” does not even appear. To what degree, however, it contains a concept of ideology, one of great importance for the theory of knowledge, is something that we will discuss.
