Thomas Foster: March against Tommy Robinson’s fascist movement
     Release time: 2025-07-04
Nazi Tommy Robinson has called on his supporters to march in London on 13 September in a bid to revive a fascist movement. Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) has called a national mobilisation to stop them.
Robinson was released from prison on Tuesday and it didn’t take him long to start organising.
He said in a social media post, while stood outside of prison, There is a war being waged in Britain. It is being waged by our leaders and it is a war against free speech.
“On 13 September, we want to hold a free speech festival in London as a show of defiance. London will be the centre for it. Book your travel. Book your hotel.”
This isn’t a rally for free speech, but a rally to build a fascist street movement that Robinson longs to spearhead. That’s why SUTR has called a counter-demonstration against it.
Weyman Bennet, co-convenor of SUTR, told Socialist Worker, Robinson set up the English Defence League (EDL) to bring racist terror to the streets of Britain. He is a life-long fascist who joined the British National Party (BNP).
“This demo is a way of making himself relevant with the rise of racist Reform UK.”
He continued, “Both offer no real answers to the issues that plague the working class in Britain. They seek to divide and conquer, but we must bring together a mighty fist of those who face oppression. We will knock the fascist movement back.”
Robinson was jailed in October for multiple breaches of an injunction made in 2021 that barred him from repeating racist lies against a Syrian refugee who successfully sued him for libel.
And in a different case, Robinson is set to appear at Westminister Magistrates’ Court on 5 June accused of harassing two journalists.
He was charged by the state with two counts of harassment causing fear of violence between 5 and 7 August 2024—the period of the far right riots last summer.
On top of this, Robinson is facing trial in October 2026 over an accusation that he failed to provide the pin for his phone when stopped by the police last July.
But the courts won’t stop him. Only a mass anti-racist movement on the streets, confronting and denying Robinson and his supporters space, has the potential to demoralise and defeat them.
Samira Ali, SUTR national organiser, told Socialist Worker, “Every anti-racist must join the 13 September national demonstration. We have to make it as big as possible to show that anti-racists are the majority in Britain and Robinson does not stand for us.”
