The Communist Party of Luxembourg believes that the European Union is on the road to an unstoppable decline. This alliance of states, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012 for no apparent reason, is increasingly developing into an alliance of hostility between nations, merciless competition, hostile sanctions, unrestrained armament and the support and preparation of wars.
A week ago in Strasbourg, the EU Parliament confirmed the composition of the future EU Commission–with the narrowest possible majority of just nine MEPs, and only with the help of trickery and deception. Nevertheless, the conservative makers in the EU Parliament were finally able to celebrate their success.
Ursula von der Leyen, who was not even on the list of candidates in the EU elections, had in recent weeks cajoled the various political groups of the so-called center-right up to the radical right, and ensnared them with a wide variety of promises.
And now, with a First Vice-President from GiorgiaMeloni’s fascist Fratellid’Italia, the new Commission can not only continue the previous course, but even tighten it.This is also made possible by the appointment of a Commissioner for »Defense« for the first time, who is allowed to deal full-time with the EU’s armament and war preparations. In her first speech, the Commission President also laid down the main guidelines, which talk a lot about economy, competition and »security«, but did not say anything about what primarily concerns people in the EU countries.
Increasing poverty, rampant price rises, massive job losses, cuts to almost all important social services, an ailing education system and a sick health service, an increasingly uncertain future for young people and growing poverty in old age– none of this is mentioned in the plans and speeches of EU leaders. At the same time, the friction between the EU states, the confrontation with Russia and China and the competition with the USA are intensifying.
The Central Committee of KPL stated in its recent meeting that the confrontations in Europe and in the world are intensifying. The parties involved are not taking any effective steps to end the war in Ukraine and Israel’s war against the people of Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.
In order to end the war in Ukraine, it is urgently necessary to find a way to start negotiations and to find a solution to all the problems at stake on the basis of the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations Organization, taking into account the security interests of all sides involved, and to create a new security architecture based on the principle of the Conference on European Security and Cooperation (CSCE).
The supply of more and more weapons, ammunition and money to Ukraine has above all a negative impact on the economic situation of the donor countries. We reiterate our call for negotiations–this has nothing to do with a call for capitulation by one side or the other.
The CC of the KPL condemns Israel’s war of aggression in the Middle East. This is not only a war against Hamas or Hezbollah, but a war against the people of Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria, which contradicts all provisions of international law. The KPL reiterated its call to the Luxembourg government to work in all available forums for a ceasefire, for negotiations to solve the problems at hand, for the recognition of the state of Palestine under international law and for sanctions against the aggressor state Israel.
Our party firmly opposes the increasing the military budget by the Luxembourg government to levels not seen in the worst days of the Cold War. The introduction of compulsory military service is now also being discussed in Luxembourg.
Our party hold a press conference this week and launched a campaign against rearmament, war and military service. We are using our daily newspaper, posters and stickers and will be targeting young people in our country with leaflets.
The KPL is of the opinion that the most important task of communists at this time is to stand up for the preservation of peace. Communists have always been the first and very often the only ones to actively oppose wars and armament.
We support all campaigns and actions against armament and war, including the demonstrations against Israel’s war in the Middle East, that take place every weekend in our capital.
We support the demand to sign the UN treaty banning nuclear weapons and point out that the abolition of all nuclear weapons, without any exception, is an important precondition for peace in the world.
We take every opportunity to make it clear to the people in our country that the militarization of the EU and the war policy of NATO also have a direct impact on the social situation in our own country.
We consider this to be the most important task of our party at present.
