Since the 1980s, the rapid development of information technology and penetration of neoliberal values have led to widespread criticism of the deficiencies of traditional charity practice, giving rise to the idea of philanthrocapitalism, which views the wealthy as super agents and advocates private charity activities with a mindset of commercial investment. After the 2008 international financial crisis, Western leftist scholars have not only criticized the market-oriented commercialization of charity but further condemned the exacerbation of inequality under the rule of capital in the disguise of charity. They have comprehensively exposed the reactionary nature of philanthrocapitalism in economic, political and cultural terms. In the meantime, such critiques by Western leftist scholars are constrained by their class positions and theoretical limitations, leading to certain weakness in their analysis of philanthrocapitalism.
